Raymond Roy Landis, born 12/21/1940 in Manistee, Michigan passed away peacefully on 12/27/2024 in Waupaca, Wisconsin. His life was defined by loyalty, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to service, family, and community. Ray graduated from Manistee High School in 1958 before proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps for four years, stationed primarily in Iwakuni, Japan. Following his service, Ray dedicated a decade to law enforcement as a police officer in Ann Arbor, Tecumseh, and Manistee, Michigan. His passion for justice and education led him to earn a Master’s degree in Law Enforcement from Michigan State University. Ray spent the next 10 years shaping future generations as a college instructor at Central Missouri State University and Bay de Noc Community College, where he emphasized attention to detail, the importance of a proper chain of custody, and firearm safety.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents Edith (Riemke) and George Landis. He is survived by three siblings: Pat (Bob Grostick) of Kaleva, MI, Dotti (& Mike Lambert) of Onekama, MI, and Dan Landis of FreeSoil, MI. Also survived by his 4 children: Rob (Tracie) of Houston, TX, Tod (Becky) of Allendale, MI, Scott of Green Bay, WI and Brent of Middleville, MI; six grandchildren: Kyle (Macie), Kameron, Celeste, Raymond (Amber), Alex, and Stephanie (David); six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Ray’s loyalty to family defined him as a loving brother, father, and mentor. He took great pride in guiding his sons and Boy Scouts to grow into kind, principled young men who stood up for what they believed was right. His integrity shone through in his ability to listen deeply and thoughtfully during difficult times, demonstrating respect and love. His courage was evident as he relied on family during life’s challenges, always with grace and humility.
Ray found peace in the simple joys of life. He loved the tranquility of fishing, spending countless hours on Lake Michigan and along the Manistee and Escanaba Rivers with those he cherished. His appreciation for the serenity of lighthouses was reflected in his artistic tastes, symbolizing the calm and clarity he sought and shared with others. Those fortunate enough to know Ray over his 84 years are deeply saddened by his loss. However, we find comfort in the memory of his happy, kind demeanor and the peace he experienced as he left this world. Until we meet again, we hold onto the enduring values he taught us.
