Edgar Lyle Algiers

July 7, 1932 ~ March 3, 2024 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Edgar Algiers Obituary

Ed is ski jumping on the hills of Heaven now, and is reunited with his lifelong love, Jane, after passing away peacefully on Sunday, March 3, 2024. He was called home to the Lord at the age of 91, with loved ones by his side, at Trinity Terrace in New London, Wisconsin.

Born in New London on July 7, 1932 to the late Lance and Mildred (Dalley) Algiers, Edgar Lyle Algiers grew to become a notable athlete, local business owner and devoted family man.

As the captain of the New London football team his senior year of high school, Ed escorted the school’s first-ever Homecoming queen, Jane Klatt, to the Homecoming dance. That first date led to many more, and the pair married on June 14, 1952. They went on to have eight children and remained devoted sweethearts for 65 years, until Jane’s passing in 2017.

Ed excelled not only in football but also baseball, golf and other sports throughout his lifetime, including ski jumping. He was an outstanding athlete and the proud recipient of the 1950 Jim Bodoh Athletic Award. Later in life, he was a champion “couch coach” for his favorite professional teams, never shying away from an opportunity to express his displeasure at a play he didn't like; his family extends their condolences to the Packers and Brewers, who will have to try and somehow manage without Ed’s helpful input.

Ed ran his own successful house painting business in New London for many years, Edgar Algiers Painting and Contracting. He was a longtime member of the local United Methodist Church. He will be fondly remembered for his charm, honesty, and the constant twinkle in his eye – but most of all, for his wholehearted love for his family.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him, including his children, Karen (Timothy) Nitke of FL; Mary (Ron) Bellile of New London; Teresa (Rick) Kaepernick of CA; Ted (Pat) Algiers of New London; Jennifer Flease of New London; Kathy Algiers of Appleton; Tom (Valerie) Algiers of New London; and Tim (Jane) Algiers of Sun Prairie; as well as 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Algiers of King and Ted Algiers of Watertown; a sister, Kathy Waushesock of New London; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Ed was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, Lance and Kent Kaepernick; parents-in-law, Adolph and Ada Klatt; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

The family would like to give special thanks to Melissa and Cassie and their team at Moments Hospice, as well as Rebecca, Brittany and the entire staff at Trinity Terrace Assisted Living, for their loving care of Ed.

The Memorial Service will be on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church, 709 W. Pine St. New London, with Rev. Joyce Rich officiating. The visitation will be on Friday at the church from 9 am until the time of the service. The Maple Crest Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.
