PODCAST EPISODE 1944: THE UNSTOPPABLE CAROLYN MARY LAGO IN DISGUISE
[Intro Music: Low, pulsing bass builds into a suspenseful rhythm]
Every great crime drama needs a mastermind—someone pulling the strings from the shadows with a sharp wit and an even sharper plan. Today, we’re looking at the case of Carolyn Mary Lago, known to her inner circle as Nan Puff. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 3, 1944, Carolyn didn't just live life; she ran it like a perfectly orchestrated heist, and today, we’re diving into her final exit podcast.
For years, her chief accomplice was her husband, Johnny Lago “The Cuban Legend”. Tied together in matrimony in 1966, they pulled off an incredible five-decade operation of mutual  co-conspiracy packed with the kind of fiery spirit you only see from Bonnie & Clyde. Celebrating an incredible 51 years of marriage by the time of Johnny's passing, with Johnny just laughing every time she came up with a new scheme, and shaking his head telling her she was "talking like a sausage." When Johnny passed in 2018, Carolyn eventually shifted her operations to a tiny home
compound in Waupaca, Wisconsin, setting up shop right on Mikey and Dina’s land on the outskirts of town.
Carolyn and Mikey became a two-person crime syndicate, specializing in psychological thrills. Forensic analysis confirms the use of her long-time signature destabilization scare tactics: ambush-style jump-scares hiding behind doors and around corners, and the deployment of improvised explosive devices —inflated paper and plastic bags going off like bombs and gun shots—to induce panic and monitor immediate stress responses to all who knew her. The true mastermind move? Carolyn’s ultimate scheme wasn’t her scares, but her succession plan. She successfully seeded her signature tactics, the relentless sass and the blueprint for trouble, into her offspring. This criminal lineage has successfully reproduced the Nan Puff methodology across three generations, ensuring the ongoing operation of her wild spirit. Investigative reports also log a history of digital sabotage. Despite her brilliant real-world planning, Nan Puff proved a menace in the virtual space, often engaging in unauthorized posting of cryptic images to her oldest great-grandson's public baseball feeds. Furthermore, surveillance records indicate numerous instances of 'accidental communication'—unsolicited 'butt-dials'—to random family members, maintaining a state of digital disruption and ensuring her presence was felt, regardless of physical proximity. Dina was designated the primary handler and lead target for Nan Puff's daily operations, but even the best operatives require rotation. Carolyn and Mikey consistently ignored or never listened to Dina, deploying selective auditory masking and hearing impairment, impairment—a tactic of psychological evasion that often resulted in acute tactical fatigue for this extremely undeserving operative. Periodically, Missy was deployed as the relief operative, for a much needed escape, recharge, and regroup session. Dina returns stronger than ever to combat their auditory masking with a household megaphone (an empty paper towel roll). The low-budget counter-offensive skill, utilizing common household refuse, was immediately successful, although investigators question the long-term material durability of the amplifier, but it did the job and created much needed laughter, which was dosed often in the compound full of shenanigans, as it was the best medicine!
The investigation also uncovers a legendary history of medical resistance. The case files detail a remarkable defiance against institutional standards. Diagnosed with terminal conditions,
Carolyn—or 'Nan Puff'—maintained a strict policy of medical non-compliance, viewing her prescribed oxygen equipment as strictly optional. Her primary medical team reported years of
high-stakes negotiations and tactical evasions.
Her family gives their deepest thanks to Dr. Mannebach and Dr. Ihde and their care team for their years of incredible patience, dedication, and exceptional care despite all of her known
tactics. Investigators also have to acknowledge her spectacular final care team at ThedaCare hospice—nurses Paula and Chelsea, Social worker Donny, and Chaplain Jeffery—who
managed her care with beautiful patience, respect, and prayer. The night before the case closed, Carolyn received a beautiful final tribute when Oceano serenaded her. [Audio: Somber, contemplative music swells] Ultimately, the final chapter of the Nan Puff file closes not with a bust, but with a peaceful, self-determined exit. She evaded the medical authorities, outlasted expectations, and passed on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2026, leaving her family with the ultimate, sentimental plot twist.
She was preceded in death by a large crew of family operatives: her parents, William Valentine and Elizabeth Ann Sammer; her sisters Millie Schoeder, Nancy Johnson, and Margaret Burford;
her brothers Richard Sammer and Donald Sammer; her nieces Cindya Lago and Patricia Jones; nephews Randy, David, and Wally Demler; her great nephew, Andrew Schroeder —all sassy in their own way; and her last two faithful
dogs, Gambler and Mickey, who were all waiting to greet her at the Eternal Safehouse. Forensic evidence shows she left behind an immense circle of love. Surviving is her brother, Bill (Carol) Sammer; her "bonus sister" and best friend, Joyce (Jerry) Harvancik; and her devoted and loved beyond words, daughters Missy Lago and Dina (Michael) Lago-Gullickson. The investigation also notes she leaves behind many special nieces and nephews who held a permanent spot on her radar—you know who you are! Her legacy expands through her grandchildren: Jerry (Alisha) Mork, Justin (Laura) Mork, Melanie (Dan) Safford, Felicia Kinnee, James (Racheal) Kinnee, Breanna Kinnee, Cody Kinnee, and Cindya (Sky) Gullickson-Byrd. Her ultimate heart and souls—her great-grandchildren Easton, Chase, Kennedy, Bentley, Magnum, Jetta, Brendan, Mirabella, Sonny, Jayden, Salem, Oceano, Tiris, and Thevryn—carry her exact blueprint for trouble.
True to her rogue nature, Carolyn left explicit instructions to shut down any funeral plans: "I request no funeral, remember me as you last saw me, and have a laugh about a memory or
story I told you. Or just lurk around a corner or behind a door, grab a grocery bag, blow it up, give it a good bang, and give someone a heart felt scare, think of me, and laugh your butts off!”

She signed off by saying, "May God Bless you and may you always feel how much I love you! Life is precious, please spend it with your loved ones and don’t waste time holding grudges, we
all are just trying to do our best in this life." If you are wondering... Mumsy loved True Crime and Police shows
